Basketball cards: the series, the rookie cards and the parallels

Basketball cards are one of the fastest-moving markets in the hobby. A single season can lift a rookie from unknown to the most chased name in the hobby, and prices move more than in most other sports. The NBA licence has moved between manufacturers, and at Topps, Topps Chrome is the foundation, with several premium lines on top.

NBA Hoops

First edition 1989

NBA Hoops debuted in the 1989-90 season and was published by Panini for many years, before Topps got the NBA licence and continued the series in 2025-26. Topps' version has 300 base cards, all with a holographic surface, which sets it apart from Panini's editions. The hobby and jumbo boxes have their own Pixel Burst parallels, while retail has Light Burst parallels and its own inserts.

The chase cards are the rookie autographs of Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey and Kon Knueppel, and the lowest-numbered Pixel Burst parallels.

Topps Cosmic Chrome Basketball

First edition 2024

Cosmic Chrome is Topps' space-themed chrome series, and in basketball an unlicensed edition came first, in 2024. The 2025-26 edition was the first with an NBA licence. The base set has 200 cards, and a hobby box with 20 packs of four cards gives on average two Refractors, one Nucleus Refractor, three other parallels and 14 inserts. The parallels end with a 1-of-1 Superfractor, and the Planetary Pursuit insert set has ten versions per player, one for each celestial body. The autographs include Alien Autographs and Singularity Signatures.

The chase cards are the 1-of-1 Superfractor – on average one card in 8,319 packs – the rarest versions of Planetary Pursuit, and Alien Autographs, on average one in 1,235 packs.

Topps Chrome Update Basketball

First edition 2026

Topps Chrome Update Basketball closes the season for the NBA chrome series with 200 cards, with photos taken during the season and players who have changed teams. The 2025-26 edition was the first Update series for the NBA and came out in August 2026, after the main series in December 2025. Every hobby box has one autographed card, and the Denim Tears parallel, in a smaller print run, has designer Tremaine Emory's floral pattern on 100 stars and rookies.

The chase cards are NBA Debut Patch Autographs, the most chased cards in the series, together with the 1-of-1 Superfractor and the numbered Denim Tears parallel.

Topps Chrome Black Basketball

First edition 2026

Topps Chrome Black is the dark variant of the chrome series, with blacked-out base cards and a dense background design. The 2025-26 edition was the series' first in the NBA. The hobby box has two packs and one autographed card in a case, and the Refractor parallels run from 299 copies down to the Superfractor, a single 1 of 1.

Topps Definitive Basketball

First edition 2026

Definitive Collection existed in MLB baseball and UEFA football before the first basketball edition arrived with 2025-26, the season Topps got the NBA licence. The box is one pack of eight cards, six of them autographs, and every card is numbered to 35 or fewer, with parallels down to a 1-of-1 Gold. The cards include Definitive Nameplates with single letters from the nameplates on the jerseys, framed autographs in the Framed Autograph Collection, Triple Autographs with three players on the same card, and Rookie Patch Autographs with an autograph and a patch.

Topps Midnight Basketball

Topps Midnight has a dark design with night and moon motifs, and the 2023-24 basketball edition followed Midnight for UFC and the Bundesliga. The cards are licensed by the players' union, the NBPA, but have no team or league logos, because Topps did not have the NBA licence at the time. Each box is a single pack of seven cards, three of them autographed, and Victor Wembanyama tops the card checklist.

The chase cards are Victor Wembanyama's autographed cards and the After Hours insert set, the rarest in the edition.

Topps Chrome Basketball

Topps Chrome Basketball is Topps' chrome series in basketball, with Refractor parallels down to a 1-of-1 Superfractor. The 2023-24 and 2024-25 editions had only the licence of the players' union, the NBPA, and showed no team or league logos, and 2025-26 became the first standalone Chrome series with an NBA licence since 2008-09. That edition has rookie cards and autographed rookie cards of players including Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey.

The chase cards are the rookie autographs of Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, as well as the numbered FrozenFractor cards and the 1-of-1 Superfractor.

Topps Basketball

Topps Basketball is Topps' base set for the NBA and returned in 2025-26, after Topps received the NBA licence from October 2025. The design is based on Topps' baseball base set, with game photos and full statistics on the back, and the base set has 300 cards, 45 of them rookies. The 2025-26 edition also has retro sets for the 45th anniversary of Topps basketball cards from 1980-81.

The chase cards are Cooper Flagg's rookie card as the first pick in the draft, the Comic Court card in a very small print run, and the numbered FoilFractor and Platinum Holo Foil parallels, both 1 of 1.

Topps Finest Basketball

Topps Finest Basketball is a chrome series that got a nineties-inspired design with colour splashes, graffiti and neon in the 2025-26 edition. That edition was the first Finest with a full NBA licence since 2007-08. The 300-card base set is divided into Common, Uncommon and Rare, and every hobby box has two autographed cards and twelve parallels.

The chase cards are the low-numbered rookie parallels of Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, and cards of Victor Wembanyama and LeBron James.

Topps Signature Class Basketball

Signature Class is a Topps series with guaranteed autographed cards, two in the hobby box and four in the jumbo box. The 2025-26 edition was the series' first in the NBA, after an unlicensed football edition in 2024, and the base set has 150 cards, 50 of them rookies, in both paper and chrome versions. The autographs include Chrome Autographs, Eternal Marks and Crystal Clear Autographs on transparent acetate.

Topps Chrome Cactus Jack Basketball

Topps Chrome Cactus Jack is a collaboration between Topps, the NBA and the musician Travis Scott's brand Cactus Jack. The 2025-26 edition was the second in the collaboration, after an earlier edition tied to the All-Star Game, and the base set has 100 veterans and rookies with 18 Refractor parallels. The insert sets include Jacked Up, La Flame Legends and Utopia Highlights, and the autographs come in Base Autographs and Cactus Ink.

The chase cards are the Astrovision and Cactus Mode cards – the latter at odds of 1 in 1,200 packs – and the autographs in Cactus Ink.

Topps Chrome Sapphire Basketball

Sapphire Edition is a chrome series that is sold only online, and the whole base set has a glossy blue surface. The parallels come in six sapphire tiers, from Purple Sapphire numbered to 75 down to Padparadscha Sapphire, a single 1 of 1. The 2025-26 Update Sapphire edition has 200 cards, with rookies from the 2025 draft at numbers 151 to 200, and every box has one autographed card and three parallels.

The chase cards are Padparadscha Sapphire, a single 1 of 1, the Infinite Sapphire insert set and Future Stars Autographs of the season's rookie class.

Topps Pristine Basketball

Topps Pristine is a chrome series where every hobby box has two autographed cards and one autographed relic card, all encased. The 2025-26 edition was the series' return to the NBA after many years without an edition, with 150 players, the last 40 of whom are rookies. The First Day Issue version was sold before the regular hobby box, through a Dutch auction.

The chase cards are the on-card Pristine Autographs of stars such as Cade Cunningham and Cooper Flagg, along with dual-autograph cards and autographed relic cards.

Donruss WNBA

Donruss WNBA is Panini's Donruss series for the women's league, the WNBA. The 2026 edition has the first cards in packs of the 2026 draft class, with the top picks Azzi Fudd and Olivia Miles, and the first cards of the expansion teams Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo. The rookie cards are in the Rated Rookie subset, and the Downtown insert set got its own gold parallels.

The chase cards are the Black Lava parallel, a single 1 of 1, the exclusive Orange Laser Autographs from the FOTL box and the rookie cards of Azzi Fudd and Olivia Miles.

Jersey Fusion

Jersey Fusion is Sportscards.com's own card series, where genuine vintage cards are encased together with the players' game-worn equipment. The 1986-87 Collection is based on the original 1986-87 Fleer set: at least 50 complete sets and 125 Michael Jordan rookie cards from the same print run are encased by Beckett with a piece of genuine game-worn equipment, and more than 100 of the series' 131 players have also signed their cards. The QR code on the case leads to the certificate of authenticity and photos of the memorabilia.

The chase cards are the cards with Michael Jordan's 1986-87 Fleer rookie card, 125 of them in this edition, and the signed cards from the more than 100 players who have signed.

Topps Motif Basketball

Motif is Topps' series with an art-inspired design, where the cards are designed as works in a gallery and the autographs come in themed sets such as Aquarelle, Charcoal and Spray Paint. The first basketball edition was 2023-24, and with 2025-26 the series got a full NBA licence. The box is one pack of eight cards with five autographs. The base set has 100 cards numbered to 99, with colour parallels such as Pastel Pink and Ultramarine Blue down to a 1-of-1 Platinum, and the 2025-26 edition was also available as a First Day Issue.

The chase cards are the Logoman autographs with the NBA logo from game-worn jerseys, the 1-of-1 Platinum parallels and Motif Rookie Relic Autographs with up to four jersey pieces.

Bowman Basketball

Bowman Basketball returned with the 2025-26 edition, and the previous NBA-licensed edition was 2008-09. The 2025-26 edition was the first with both NBA players and college players in the same product: the base set has 200 cards and the prospect set 100 college players, men and women, and both are also available in Chrome. The college players' first cards carry the 1st Bowman logo. A hobby box with 20 packs of eight cards has two autographed cards: one NBA card and one college card. The Sapphire edition, the first for Bowman Basketball, has eight packs of four cards and one autographed card per box.

The chase cards are the 1-of-1 Superfractor, found only in the hobby formats, the 1-of-1 Padparadscha in the Sapphire edition, and Chrome Prospect Autographs with the college players' first autographed Bowman cards.

Topps Three Basketball

Topps Three is an NBA series built around the number three: insert sets in threes, memorabilia cards with three pieces and cards numbered to three. The series debuted with the 2023-24 edition, licensed by the players' union, the NBPA, and with two autographs per box, and the 2025-26 edition is the first with a full NBA licence. Each box is one pack of four cards: three autographs or autographed memorabilia cards, and one base card or insert. The base set has 100 cards, each numbered to 49 or fewer, with parallels down to a 1-of-1 Platinum.

The chase cards are the 1-of-1 Platinum parallels, Rookie 3 Patch Autographs and Triple Relics Autographs with three memorabilia pieces.

Why basketball cards move so quickly

  1. A few players carry a whole team. One player's form shows directly in the team's results, and in card prices.
  2. The season is long and closely followed. Every evening brings new numbers to react to.
  3. Rookie classes are compared year by year. A strong class lifts all the cards from its season.
  4. The playoffs concentrate attention. Prices move the most then.
  5. The market is international. Demand comes from several continents at the same time.

The most expensive basketball cards

  • Rookie cards of generational players. The single most expensive segment in modern basketball.
  • Cards marked 1 of 1. A single copy, often in the premium lines.
  • Autographed rookie cards. Signed directly on the card, not on a sticker.
  • Graded top copies. A grade of 10 can cost many times as much as an ungraded card.
  • Older cards of legends. From a time when almost nothing was kept in good condition.

Common mistakes

  • Buying after a player's latest game. The price has already moved.
  • Comparing a base card with a numbered parallel of the same player.
  • Opening boxes to chase one specific rookie.
  • Storing chrome cards without card sleeves. They scratch each other straight away.
  • Mixing up an update series with the base set.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who makes the NBA cards? The licence has moved between manufacturers, and the manufacturer is printed on the packaging. Older Panini series are available on the secondary market.
  • What is a parallel? The same card in a different colour, often with a printed print run.
  • Why are rookie cards the most expensive? The supply is locked to the debut year. See the rookie card guide.
  • What does 2025-26 mean? The season the cards cover.
  • Is grading worth it? Often, on expensive rookie cards. See the grading guide.

Parallels are a world of their own in basketball cards

Basketball has expanded its parallel system further than most other sports. One and the same photo of a player can exist in thirty colours, from common unnumbered variants to a single copy in gold. The colours have their own names, and the names differ between series and years.

In practice this means three things. First, you cannot price a card without knowing exactly which parallel it is. Second, two cards with the same photo can differ a thousand times in price. Third, the series' own list of parallels is the only reliable source, because the colour names follow no common standard.

Getting started with basketball cards

  1. Choose a player or a team. Collecting everything is not possible in basketball.
  2. Buy a value box first to learn what the series looks like.
  3. Learn the series' parallel names before you pay a lot for single cards.
  4. Put everything you want to keep in penny sleeves when you open.
  5. Buy the cards you really want as singles, instead of opening against the odds.

What to look for in a box

Basketball boxes differ more than in most other sports, because the series are built so differently. A hobby box from a chrome series contains relatively few cards, but with a high share of parallels and a guaranteed autograph or a guaranteed chase card. A value box contains many more cards for the money, but almost only base cards and the odd parallel.

This means that someone who wants many cards and someone who wants a chance at an expensive card should buy completely different things. Both are stated on the packaging, as the number of packs, the number of cards per pack and what is guaranteed. Read those figures before you compare prices, or you will be comparing two products that only share a name.
