OCG and TCG
The Japanese version is called OCG and the international one TCG. They have separate release schedules and separate banlists, and the Japanese one has its own card pool. How the releases are divided, from core boosters to ready-made decks, is explained in the set guide, and the card dimensions are explained in the beginner's guide. Card sleeves are listed under accessories.
From manga to World Championship
The card game is based on Duel Monsters, the game in Kazuki Takahashi's manga Yu-Gi-Oh!, which ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1996 to 2004. In the manga the game was first called Magic & Wizards and was modelled on Magic: The Gathering. As early as 1998, before Konami's card game, Bandai released Yu-Gi-Oh! cards under the name Yu-Gi-Oh! Carddass. The first Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship was played in August 2003 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
