The NBA licence and the team logos
Panini got the NBA licence in 2009, taking over from Upper Deck and Topps, which had held it since 1991/92 and 1992/93 respectively. Panini cards released after the licence left the company lack the team names and logos. What the change means for the series is covered in the basketball guide.
Basketball cards before Panini
The first cards featuring professional basketball came from Bowman in 1948, a 72-card series that includes George Mikan's rookie card. Topps released its first basketball cards in 1957 but stopped after one season, and then made NBA cards from 1969 to 1982. Hoops started as the NBA's own series and was later published by SkyBox and Fleer, among others.
