The card games and the trading cards

Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece Card Game and Disney Lorcana each have their own section, and Pokémon has one of its own. In a card game you build a deck and play against someone. The trading cards with Marvel, Disney and Star Wars have no game rules and are listed under Entertainment, and the guide to entertainment cards explains what sets them apart from the card games.

The genre's first years

In 1995 alone, 38 new trading card games came onto the market, among them Doomtrooper and Middle-earth. Doomtrooper came from the Swedish game publisher Target Games in Stockholm, was based on the Swedish game world Mutant Chronicles, and its first edition was also released in Swedish. In 1997 Wizards of the Coast received a patent on the gameplay of trading card games, including turning a card to show it has been used and building the deck from a larger collection.
