Trading cards with Marvel, Star Wars and Disney

Entertainment cards are made by the same manufacturers and in the same format as sports cards. Topps, Panini and Upper Deck put their series on Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, video games and film instead of athletes, with the same split into hobby and retail and the same kind of signed cards and special prints. The difference is the licence, not the product.

The formats are the same as in sports cards

Hobby box, mega box, blaster, value box and case work exactly as in sports cards. The hobby channel has more cards per pack and guaranteed contents, retail has a lower price and its own cards that are not in the hobby boxes. The full breakdown is in the guide on hobby or retail. What differs is that the cards cannot be played with: they are pure trading cards without rules.

The series you will come across

Topps Chrome exists for Marvel Comics, Marvel Studios and Star Wars, with chrome-finished cards and colour parallels just as in sports cards. Topps Finest is the premium line with fewer but more elaborate cards per box, and Sapphire has its own chrome surface and its own price level, a collector series rather than something you open for fun. Garbage Pail Kids is Topps' own humour series with a long history and an entirely separate collector base. Upper Deck makes Marvel series with signed cards and sketch series, and on top of that themed series around individual sagas or groups of characters come out continuously.

The licences you most often come across are Marvel, both the comics and the films, which changed licence holder from Upper Deck to Topps in 2025; Star Wars, where Topps has held the licence since 1977 with a few breaks; Disney with anniversary series and animated classics; individual film and TV series around current titles; video game worlds; and smaller music and entertainment series where the autographs are the main draw.

Mars Attacks

First edition 1962

Mars Attacks started in 1962 as a 55-card science fiction series, which Topps first test-marketed under the name Attack from Space through the company Bubbles Inc. The images were considered too gory and sexual, and Topps repainted 13 of the cards before production was stopped after questions from a prosecutor in Connecticut. The series has been reissued several times, including as Mars Attacks Archives in 1994 and Mars Attacks Heritage in 2012, and Tim Burton's 1996 film Mars Attacks! is based on the cards. The Christmas edition Mars Attacks Christmas from 2026 tells a continuous story in 50 cards in which the Martians attack Christmas.

The chase cards are the hand-drawn sketch cards from 78 artists, all in a single copy, and the celebrity-signed cards with names such as Mike Tyson and Jeff Goldblum.

Wacky Packages

First edition 1967

Wacky Packages are Topps' parodies of well-known consumer products and their packaging, issued as stickers. The first series in 1967 had 44 die-cut cards that you moistened on the back and stuck up, with parodies by Art Spiegelman that were mostly painted by Norman Saunders. Between 1973 and 1975 Wacky Packages was Topps' best-selling product, ahead of the baseball cards. The first All-New Series came in 2004, and in the 2026 edition, which was sold only via Topps.com, every box has a sketch card or a card signed by one of the artists.

The chase cards are Artist Autographs, ten cards signed by five artists, and sketch cards in a single copy each from 25 artists.

Garbage Pail Kids

First edition 1985

Garbage Pail Kids is Topps' sticker series from 1985, created by Art Spiegelman, Mark Newgarden and John Pound as a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls; the owners of the dolls sued Topps in 1986 and the characters were redrawn after the settlement. Each image exists in two versions with the same art but different names, marked a and b, and the sticker is die-cut so that only the character with its name plate and logo comes away from the backing. The original series was issued until 1988, when sales fell; the All-New Series revived the brand in 2003, the Brand-New Series followed in 2012 and then themed editions. The 2026 Halloween edition was sold only online, with 50 base stickers, a third name variant (C names), Slime parallels numbered to 50 or fewer, sketch cards from 53 artists, artist autographs and the insert set Scream Queens with Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The chase cards are the hand-drawn sketch cards, a single copy each from 53 artists, the artist autographs and the Slime parallels numbered to 50 or fewer.

Topps Star Wars Chrome Galaxy

First edition 2021

Star Wars Galaxy started in 1993 as Topps' first Star Wars series in ten years, after the cards for Return of the Jedi, and the whole series was built on original art, including the subset New Visions where comic artists and illustrators made their own Star Wars images. The chrome version came in 2021 and prints images from earlier Galaxy series with chrome technology, mixed with illustrations made for the chrome editions. The 2026 edition had sketch cards from 218 artists, while signed cards came on average only one per case.

The chase cards are sketch cards from the 218 contributing artists, in three foil variants, and the signed Galaxy, Dual, Triple and Quad autographs, on average one per case.

In the 2024 edition, released in March 2025, an encased special card was also included in the box.

The chase cards are Light Side Autographs and Dark Side Autographs with actors such as Mark Hamill and Ian McDiarmid, plus Superfractor in a single copy.

Topps Chrome Star Wars

First edition 2023

Before 2023, every chrome Star Wars series, all the way back to Star Wars Chrome Archives in 1999, belonged to another Star Wars series such as Galaxy or Legacy or to a single film or TV series, so Topps Chrome Star Wars that year became the first standalone one. The series is released every year and covers all of Star Wars, and since 2024 characters making their debut are marked with a Debut medallion, the equivalent of the rookie marking on sports cards. The base set has grown from 100 cards in 2023 to 200 cards in the 2025 and 2026 editions, and the SuperFractor, numbered 1 of 1, is the most chased card. Signed cards exist from actors such as Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford.

The release has a 90-card base set and an equally large Chapters set tied to the individual issues, and the Chapters cards also come signed. The special cards use several techniques, with lenticular cards in Collision Event and retro-style hologram cards in Turning Points, and among the rare cards are hand-drawn sketch cards in a single copy.

Harry Potter Always from Panini

Harry Potter Always Trading Cards is Panini's collection with Harry Potter, and it is built on 210 cards. A hundred of them are Hogwarts base cards in six subsets, and the base cards also come in parallel versions. On top of that come 50 Magic of Films cards in four subsets and 60 Special Chase cards in five subsets. The motifs mix previously unpublished images and material from the filming with artwork from the films' designers and styles inspired by manga.

A pack from the display has six cards: four base cards and two special cards. The Premium Box has ten premium packs with eight cards in each, and they contain numbered parallels all the way down to unique 1/1 cards. The Premium Treasure Box is the most elaborate packaging in the collection.

The starter pack has an album for the collection, two sealed packs and a Limited Edition card, so the collection has a place from the first pack. The eco blister pack has four packs and a Limited Edition card. The Limited Edition cards are not in the regular packs, so they are collected through formats such as the starter pack and the eco blister pack. The album is then filled with packs from the same collection.

What is sought after

Sketch cards are in a class of their own. They are hand-drawn by comic artists and exist in only one copy each, which makes them the series' one-of-ones and original art rather than prints. Next come signed cards from the actors in the films, often the most expensive in a series, and numbered parallels where the print run is printed on the card. Cards of characters that have become topical through a new film or series also move, as does the first card of a new character, the equivalent of a rookie card in sports.

How value moves compared with sports cards

Sports cardsValue follows the athletes' careers. Moves quickly, year by year.
Entertainment cardsValue follows the characters' popularity. Moves more slowly but in longer waves.
TriggerA new film, a new series or an anniversary, rather than a season.
BuyersOften people who like the world of the characters, not the hobby itself.

The result is that a series can stay flat for a long time and then move sharply when something is released, and that demand is not tied to how someone performs on the pitch or the track. That makes the market less nervous but harder to time.

Who buys them

People who like the characters rather than the hobby, and for whom the card is an object rather than a collecting project. Gift buyers, since the world of the characters is familiar to everyone. Art collectors, especially for sketch cards, which are unique original drawings. And autograph collectors, who buy for the signature rather than the card.

Things to consider when buying

  1. Check which series the card comes from. The same character appears in several series at completely different price levels.
  2. Check whether the card is numbered, and if so, to what print run.
  3. Determine whether the signature is on-card or on a sticker. Paying autograph prices for a sticker without checking is an expensive mistake.
  4. Keep in mind that sketch cards are unique and therefore hard to compare on price.
  5. Store them with hard protection. They cannot be replaced. See the storage guide.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you play with them? No, they are pure trading cards without rules.
  • Are they real trading cards? Yes, made by the same companies as sports cards and with the same techniques.
  • What is a sketch card worth? It depends entirely on the artist and the motif, since every card is unique.
  • Do they make good gifts? Yes, perhaps the best of all card products, since the recipient recognises the characters.
  • Are there rookie cards? The equivalent is the first card of a new character, which often carries a premium.
