Yu-Gi-Oh! sets: new cards, reprints and the Forbidden & Limited List

Yu-Gi-Oh!, often written yugioh, has been releasing cards since 1999 and has more releases behind it than any other card game if you count all the special editions and reprints. Listing them all is pointless. What you need to know is what kinds of releases there are, because each kind has its own role: some introduce new cards, others make expensive cards available again.

Standard size compared with Japanese sizeA standard card measures 63 by 88 millimetres. Japanese size, which Yu-Gi-Oh! uses, measures 59 by 86 millimetres. Standard 63 × 88 mm Pokémon · Magic · One Piece Japanese size 59 × 86 mm Yu-Gi-Oh! 4 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter. A Yu-Gi-Oh! card slides around in a standard sleeve and wears at the edge. Japanese Pokémon and One Piece cards are standard size.
Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are smaller and need Japanese-size sleeves. Japanese editions of other games are standard size. The sizes are drawn to scale.

How to read the card

The set code is below the artwork on the right, like LOB-005 or MP24-EN123. In the middle of the code is the region marker:

ENEnglish, North American edition
EU or EEuropean English edition
DEGerman
FRFrench
ITItalian
SPSpanish
JPJapanese, own numbering

The same card in two regions is two different printings, and the collector value can differ considerably even when playability is identical.

Rarity shows in the colour of the card name and the foil on the artwork. At the bottom left is the passcode, an eight-digit number that is unique to each card and the quickest way to look up exactly the right card. If the text 1st Edition appears next to the passcode, it is the first edition.

The release types

Core boosters are the main sets, four a year, and they contain new cards and new archetypes. Structure decks are ready-made theme decks and cheap, and many duelists buy two or three copies to get more of the same key cards, since a deck may contain at most three cards with the same name. Starter decks teach the basics. The yearly tin is a tin with packs and promo cards and one of the year's biggest products.

The reprint series, such as Legendary Collection and Battles of Legend, make expensive cards available again, and the premium releases are small sets made up only of specially treated cards in high rarity. Battles of Legend mixes reprints with new cards. Alongside the main game there is Speed Duel, with its own smaller format and its own card pool, and Rush Duel, a simplified variant mainly in Japan.

Why reprints matter so much

Konami actively reprints strong cards in new sets and reprint series, unlike some other games where the supply is fixed. A reprinted version is always a different printing from the original release, even when it is exactly the same card in gameplay terms, and that difference is why two listings for "the same card" can still be for completely different things.

The Forbidden & Limited List governs everything

Several times a year Konami publishes a list that limits how many copies of a card may be used in tournament play. A card can be forbidden, limited to one or limited to two. The list can change the whole landscape of the game overnight. Always check the current list before you build a tournament deck.

The releases that shaped the game

Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon from 2002 was the first English set, and its first edition includes some of the most sought-after cards in the hobby. Metal Raiders came early and carries several of the game's best-known cards. The early tournament prizes were handed out in extremely small print runs, some in fewer than ten copies. The modern reprint series have made previously unattainable cards playable for most people. What is available to buy is in the Yu-Gi-Oh! category.

The sets are listed in release order, with what sets each one apart from other Yu-Gi-Oh! releases.

Finding your way as a beginner

  1. Start with a structure deck, ideally two of the same for more copies of the key cards.
  2. Pick an archetype you find fun and stick to it instead of spreading out your purchases.
  3. Buy single cards to fill out, not packs. The rarity makes the pack route expensive.
  4. Check the Forbidden & Limited List before deciding how many copies of a card to run.
  5. Buy the right sleeves: Japanese size. Standard size does not fit.

If you want to learn to play, a structure deck is the right choice. If you are building a strong deck, it is core set boosters plus single cards. If you are after old classics no longer printed in their original release, a reprint release is the way in. If you collect beautiful cards, the premium releases with gold printing or special finishes are right. And if you just want to open for fun, a tin gives several packs and promo cards.

The mistakes

Buying standard-size sleeves is the most common mistake and is noticed immediately. Comparing an original card with a reprint and thinking they are the same printing is another. On top of that: building a deck without first reading the Forbidden & Limited List, mixing cards from different regions in the same deck at a tournament, and assuming an old card is automatically rare when reprints have made most of them common again.

Frequently asked questions

  • How many sets are there? A great many, and new ones are added several times a year.
  • Does the release matter for playability? No, a card is the same card regardless of which set it comes from.
  • Does the first edition differ from later printings? Yes, it has its own marking on the card and is more sought after among collectors.
  • Why do some cards exist in several different printings? Konami often reprints strong cards, in new sets and reprint series.
  • What is the difference between a core booster and a special edition? Core boosters contain new cards, special editions mostly reprints.
