NFL cards: the series and the most expensive cards
American football is one of the largest card markets in the world, and it is unusually focused on a single position. The quarterback carries the team on the field and carries the prices in the card world. A rookie card of a quarterback who makes a breakthrough is among the most expensive modern sports cards there are, while cards of players in other positions rarely reach the same levels.

The box is a single pack of seven cards, and the 2026 edition has one autograph per hobby box and a base set of 200 cards with parallels from Green down to the one-of-one Inception. It was also available as First Day Issue, where each box has an FDI Patch Auto numbered to 22. The autographs include Rookie Jumbo Relic Autographs, Dual Rookie Autographs and Dawn of Greatness.
The chase cards are the one-of-one Inception parallels, the FDI Patch Auto numbered to 22 and the Dawn of Greatness autographs, numbered to 20 or fewer in the 2024 edition.
Topps Signature Class Football
Signature Class mixes paper, chrome and acetate cards and made its debut in 2024 as an unlicensed football series. The 2025 edition, the second in the series, got an official NFL licence and has 100 Veteran Class cards and 150 Rookie Class cards in the main set. The hobby box has two signed cards and the jumbo box four.
The chase cards are the multi-signed dual and triple autograph cards and the Crystal Clear parallels in transparent acetate.
Topps Midnight Football
Midnight is Topps' chrome series with a dark design and the moon and night as its theme. It had appeared in Bundesliga, NBA and UFC, among other sports, before the first football edition, 2024 Topps Midnight Football, came out in May 2025. It had no NFL licence, so the team and league logos were retouched out. The 2026 edition was the first with an NFL licence, with 100 base cards and 13 parallels down to the one-of-one Black Light. The box is a single pack of seven cards with three Chrome autographs, and the 2026 edition was also available as First Day Issue.
The chase cards are the one-of-one Black Light, Witching Hour numbered to three and case hits such as Celestial Roots, Dream Land, Night Night and Twilight.
Topps Holiday Football
Topps Holiday Football takes Topps' Christmas edition, known from Topps Holiday Baseball, to the NFL for the first time in 2026. The base cards have the same design as Topps' 2026 American football base set but with Christmas lights, baubles, garlands and ribbons, and there are red parallels and Hidden Elf cards. The Dear Santa card is designed as a letter to Santa, with a sticker autograph and a piece of a garment the player has worn.
The chase cards are the Dear Santa cards with a sticker autograph and a piece of the player's match jersey, and the Snow Globe Moments and Deck the Fields chase cards.
Panini Prestige
Prestige is one of Panini's base series in American football with a large base set: 401 cards in the 2024 edition, 91 of them rookies from that year's draft class. The last ten rookie cards have a smaller print run and are in landscape format. The parallels are called Xtra Points and run from the common Galaxy variants down to Platinum, numbered to 10, and the retail formats have their own Xtra Points variants.
The chase cards are Draft Day Signatures, exclusive to the H2 boxes, and On the Clock Signatures of college players through Panini's NIL programme.
Panini Phoenix
Phoenix is Panini's chrome series in American football with Optichrome cards, 250 base cards in the 2025 edition and an average of one rookie card per hobby pack. The series has more than 80 parallels, and Fire Burst is a variant found only in the box set edition. The Genies insert set turns up about once per case of boxes, and signed rookie cards with a jersey relic are found only in the hobby box.
The chase cards are RPS Rookie Patch Autographs and Rookie Phenom Jersey Autographs of that year's rookie class, plus the numbered Fire Burst parallel and the one-of-one Celestial.
Topps Chrome Football
Topps Chrome Football returned with the 2024 edition after a break of almost ten years since 2015, but without the team and league licence. The base set has 300 cards, of which the last 100 are rookies, and each hobby box has two signed cards, with autographs of players including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Bo Nix and Tom Brady. The Refractor parallels go down to the one-of-one Superfractor.
The chase cards are the negatively numbered FrozenFractor cards, numbered to minus five, and the one-of-one Superfractor.
Topps Finest Football
With its colourful 1990s design, Topps Finest Football was a recurring NFL series until 2015. It disappeared when Topps lost the NFL licence to Panini and returned as an unlicensed edition in 2024. The 2025 edition had an NFL licence again. Each hobby box has two signed cards, the Breaker Delight box three, and the Refractor parallels go down to the one-of-one Superfractor.
The chase cards are Rookie Finest Autographs of names such as Cam Ward and Ashton Jeanty, Finest Greats Autographs with legends such as Jerry Rice, and the one-of-one Framed White chase card.
Panini Absolute
Absolute used to be called Absolute Memorabilia, and memorabilia cards are still a large part of the series, together with signed cards. The Kaboom insert set turns up about once per case of boxes, in the variants Kaboom Vertical, Kaboom Horizontal and Kaboom Super Bowl. The series is also available as Special Countdown Calendar, an advent calendar with the Holiday Suit Relics memorabilia set, which is found only there.
The chase cards are Rookie Premiere Materials Autographs, guaranteed once per hobby box, plus the 1-of-1 parallel of the Glass insert and the Purple parallel from the FOTL box, numbered to 24.
Leaf Metal
Leaf Metal is Leaf's line with a chrome-like surface and a focus on on-card autographs. Leaf Metal is made without the major leagues' licences, and the football editions have cards of the players in each year's NFL draft.
The chase cards are the signed cards of hyped, newly drafted players, signed before they have even played an NFL game.
Topps Flagship Football
The 2026 edition was Topps' first NFL base set since 2015, after Topps gained the NFL's exclusive rights on 1 April 2026. The design is the same as in Topps' 2026 baseball base set, and the base set has 300 veterans and 100 rookies, with first pick Fernando Mendoza on the cover of the hobby box. Each hobby box has one signed card or memorabilia card, and Flagship First Signatures has on-card rookie autographs.
The chase cards are Flagship First Signatures with on-card rookie autographs, and Fernando Mendoza's rookie card as the first pick.
Topps Heritage Football
Topps Heritage Football returned in 2026, having last been published for the 2015 NFL season. The 2026 edition has the 1976 Topps design on a base set of 400 cards, and all 400 are also available in a chrome version. Selected stars and rookies are available as image variations with a smaller print run, and autographs can be found in Heritage Rookie Autographs, among other sets.
The chase cards are the rare image variations of stars and rookies, Heritage Rookie Autographs and the redemption cards for vintage Walter Payton cards.
Bowman Football
Bowman Football returned in 2026 after ten years without an edition and became the first product with licensed cards from both the NFL and American college football in the same box. NFL stars are found in Bowman Chrome Autographs, while college players from 88 universities are found in Bowman University Chrome Prospects Autographs, where some carry the 1st Bowman marking. Arch Manning, who previously had a deal with Panini, got his first Topps card in the 2026 edition.
The chase cards are Arch Manning's first Topps card, Bowman Chrome Autographs of NFL stars such as Josh Allen and the signed 1st Bowman cards of college players such as CJ Carr.
Donruss Football
Panini's Donruss Football was published in 2026 after the NFL licence had gone to Fanatics and Topps, so the pro cards are unlicensed and college players got a bigger place in the series. The base set has 200 cards, and the Downtown insert set with its illustrated artwork and Campus Kings are back. Each hobby box has one signed card and one memorabilia card.
The chase cards are the Downtown insert set with its illustrated designs, the new Downtown Duos and the signed Dominators Autographs.
Bowman U Best Football
Bowman University Best combines Bowman's Best with Topps' college series Bowman U in a chrome product about prospects in American college football. The 2024 edition has a base set of 100 cards, and a hobby box has twelve packs of five cards and four autographs; the series is also available as Breaker's Delight. The Refractor parallels of the base cards run from Yellow Refractor, numbered to 75, down to the one-of-one SuperFractor. The insert sets include Bowman Masterpieces and Elements of the Game, and the autographs include Dual and Triple Autographs.
The chase cards are the one-of-one SuperFractor and the dual- and triple-signed cards.
Why the quarterback carries the whole market
The position handles the ball in almost every offensive play, and a good quarterback changes a whole team's prospects for ten years. This makes collectors focus their search there, and focused demand turns into high prices. A quarterback who is drafted high gets a rookie card that the market prices even before the player has played a game.
As a result, price movements are dramatic in both directions. A quarterback who does not live up to what the draft promised quickly loses card value, and one who exceeds expectations quickly creates a much greater demand. Other positions move less in both directions.
The most expensive NFL cards
- Signed rookie cards of top quarterbacks. The most expensive segment in modern American football.
- Cards marked 1 of 1. A single copy, often in the premium lines.
- Low-numbered parallels of rookie cards from strong draft classes.
- Graded top copies where the grade reduces the buyer's risk.
- Older cards of legends that have survived in fine condition.

Common mistakes
- Buying rookie cards straight after the draft, when prices are at their highest.
- Comparing a licensed series with an unlicensed one without knowing the difference.
- Believing that all positions are priced the same.
- Opening boxes to chase a specific player.
- Storing chrome cards without card sleeves.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between licensed and unlicensed series? Licensed cards may show the teams' logos and jerseys. Unlicensed cards may not, but can have early autographs.
- When do the rookie cards come out? The same year the player is drafted.
- Why are quarterbacks the most expensive? The position decides the team's prospects, and demand is focused there.
- What is a parallel? The same card in a different colour, often with a printed number of copies.
- Is grading worth it? Often, for expensive rookie cards. See the grading guide.
Licensed or not, and why it matters
American football is a sport where the difference between licensed and unlicensed cards is easy to see. A licensed series may show the teams' logos, colours and jerseys. An unlicensed series may not, and this is visible straight away on the card: the jersey is retouched, the logo removed or the player shown in college clothing.
This does not mean that unlicensed cards have no value. On the contrary, they have a role of their own, because they are often first. An unlicensed manufacturer can sign a deal directly with a newly drafted player and publish a signed card before the licensed series are out. For collectors who want the earliest autograph, it is precisely these cards that count.
The practical result when you buy: first decide what kind of card you are looking at, and only compare it with cards of the same kind. A licensed rookie card and an unlicensed signed card of the same player are two different products with two different price levels.
Starting to collect NFL cards
- Choose a team or a player. The league is too big to collect broadly.
- Start with an affordable series to learn what the cards look like.
- Learn the series' parallel names before you pay a lot for singles.
- Put everything you want to keep in penny sleeves when you open.
- Wait to buy rookie cards until the hype after the draft has settled.
The draft drives the year
The card year in American football follows the draft rather than the season. Once the new players have been picked, the series get going, and interest is at its highest straight afterwards. This means rookie cards are often at their most expensive before the player has even played a game, because the price is then based on expectation alone.
Experienced collectors therefore rarely buy straight after the draft. They wait until a few games have been played, when the market has something real to go on. This works in both directions: a player who was drafted low but plays well can get a rookie card that goes from unnoticed to very much in demand.
