Which deck box fits your deck?
The number in the name is how many double-sleeved cards fit, not how many unsleeved ones. A box marked 100+ takes a hundred-card Commander deck in sleeves. If you also use perfect fit sleeves the deck takes up more space, but that is already included in the number. Beyond size, boxes differ in material, lid design and whether they are built to stand on the play table.
Quick facts
| The number in the name | Number of double-sleeved cards that fit |
|---|---|
| Pokémon or Magic deck | 60 cards, so 80+ |
| Commander deck | 100 cards, so 100+ or larger |
| Double-sleeved deck | Already included in the number |
| Several decks | 133+ or a portable case |
The sizes
| 80+ | A standard 60-card deck with room to spare. Pokémon, Magic Standard, Yu-Gi-Oh! |
|---|---|
| 100+ | Commander deck. |
| 133+ and up | Deck plus extras, or two smaller decks. |
| 200 to 800 | Storage boxes rather than deck boxes. See the storage guide. |
Work out which size you need
- Count the cards in the deck. Usually 60 in Pokémon and Magic, 40 in Yu-Gi-Oh!
- Add the sleeves. A sleeved deck takes up considerably more space than an unsleeved one.
- Add the sideboard and extra cards if the game has them.
- Add dice and counters if they will go in the same box.
- Choose the next size up. A box that is exactly full wears on the sleeves.
Ultra Pro's boxes: PRO 80+, 100+, Eclipse, Full View and Alcove
PRO 80+ and Deck Box 100+
PRO 80+ is Ultra Pro's simple plastic box for up to 80 double-sleeved standard-size cards, made of PVC-free material and with a label area on the lid. Deck Box 100+ takes up to 100 double-sleeved cards, has a self-locking lid and comes with Pokémon artwork and a matching card divider.
Eclipse PRO 100+ and Full View
Eclipse PRO 100+ is made of rigid, archival-safe polypropylene and takes up to 110 cards in Deck Protector sleeves. The lid is self-locking and has a thumb grip. Full View is a rigid polypropylene box for up to 75 double-sleeved cards, with artwork and a matching card divider.
Alcove Flip, Click, Edge and Tower
Alcove is Ultra Pro's range of leatherette boxes with magnetic lids, and all of them take up to 100 double-sleeved cards. Flip has a lid that folds up and two thumb grips. Click has interchangeable magnetic badges on the lid. Edge has an embossed pattern and a lock in addition to the magnets. Tower also has a removable compartment in the base for dice and coins.
The designs
The simple plastic box with a snap lid is the cheapest and fully functional. The hard plastic box has a tighter lid and is built to survive a bag. The magnetic lid opens like a book, holds up better over time than a snap closure and often carries licensed artwork. Tower-shaped boxes stand upright on the table with room for dice and counters, cube-shaped ones are compact with a magnetic lid and often made of fabric, and leatherette boxes come in several series with a more durable surface material. There are also clear boxes where the deck shows through, table boxes built to be left out, and flip-and-tray models with a fold-out part that works as a dice tray during play.
Choose by where the box will be. If it goes in a bag, you need a lid that stays shut. A box that opens in your backpack is worse than no box at all. If it stands on the play table, the tower shape is made for that. If it just sits on a shelf, the simplest one is enough.
What matters in practice
The deck not fitting with sleeves is the most common disappointment: the box that fit perfectly won't close once the cards have deck protectors. Next comes room for more than the deck, since counters, dice and an extra stack take up space. Whether the lid holds decides if the box is fit to carry. And how often you open it decides if the extra cost of a magnetic lid is worth it: snap closures wear out, magnets hardly do.
Several decks and larger storage
If you have several decks, you either get one box per deck or a larger case with compartments. Portable cases take four hundred to eight hundred cards and are built to be carried around. For the collection itself there are two-piece plastic boxes in steps of twenty-five, fifty, one hundred, one hundred and fifty or two hundred and fifty cards, and cardboard boxes from eight hundred up to five thousand cards for shops and really large collections. Divider tabs sort the inside of the box and are what makes a large box useful at all.
Choosing
One deck on a budget: simple plastic box in 80+. One deck you carry with you: hard box or magnetic lid in 100+. Commander with perfect fit sleeves: 100+ or larger. Game nights at home: tower-shaped box with room for dice. Several decks at once: Twin flip-and-tray or a larger case. Just shelf storage: two-piece plastic box by capacity.
The mistakes are the reverse. Buying an 80 box for a sleeved hundred-card deck that won't fit. Putting double-sleeved cards in a box rated for single sleeves. Carrying a magnetic box loose in a backpack without protection. Choosing a box by its artwork instead of by what it needs to hold. And storing the whole collection in deck boxes, which ends up both expensive and hard to keep track of.
Frequently asked questions
- Does an 80+ really hold 80 cards? Yes, double-sleeved. Without sleeves more fit, but then the cards rub.
- Can I use a deck box for storage? Yes, but a two-piece plastic box is cheaper per card.
- What happens if the box is too big? The deck slides around and the edges wear.
- Are magnetic lids better? They hold up better over time and open more smoothly, but cost more.
- Do I need one box per deck? In practice yes, since decks otherwise get mixed up.
